Youngster Tuktamisheva leads three Americans at Skate Canadahttp://www.examiner.com/figure-skating- ... ate-canadaFourteen and skating in her first Grand Prix event, Russian superstar-in-the-making Elizaveta Tuktamisheva stormed to the lead at Skate Canada, the second stop of the Grand Prix series this season. The ladies opened the competition with their short programs.
Second to take the ice, Tuktamisheva sailed through her jumping passes with ease, landing a triple lutz-triple toe, the most difficult combination attempted by any of the ladies in the competition. She backed that combination up with a solid triple loop and a double axel to post a score of 59.57, which no one was able to catch. She is currently five points ahead of the rest of the ladies.
In second, third, and fifth are the three Americans in the event. Ashley Wagner, skating in her first international competition under the tutelage of John Nicks, delivered a solid performance to grab second with a 54.50. Her triple lutz received a wrong-edge call, which resulted in negative grades of execution for the element. Former U.S. champion and current Stanford Cardinal Rachael Flatt is in third but only a quarter-point behind Wagner.
The other former U.S. champion in the field, Mirai Nagasu, is currently in fifth after a fall on an underrotated triple lutz. The rest of her short program was strong, including the best spins in the event, and she is behind her teammates by a point and a half. Sandwiched in between is Japan’s Akiko Suzuki, who is in fourth after singling the backend loop of her combination.
