Ps!

ISU World Figure Skating Championships 2011 Tokyo

Lausanne, March 14, 2011

Taking into account the continued critical developments in Japan, the ISU’s primary concern for the safety of all participants, spectators and members of concerned entities as well as the travel advisories from many governments to avoid travel to Japan until the situation is settled, the ISU in consultation and agreement with the Japan Skating Federation (JSF) and in line with the advise of the Japanese authorities, has concluded that the staging of the ISU World Figure Skating Championships 2011 scheduled to be held on March 21-27, 2011 is not possible and the Championships will not be held during that time.

The postponement of the Event or alternatively the final cancellation is under evaluation.

The same applies to the ISU World Team Trophy in Figure Skating scheduled to be held in Yokohama on April 14-17, 2011.

It is understood that a postponement of the above-mentioned World Championships as well as the holding of the ISU World Team Trophy is subject to the confirmation by the competent Japanese authorities that the situation is back to normal conditions allowing the safe conduct of major ISU sports Events in the Tokyo area.

As soon as the situation in this respect has been finalized, the ISU will inform all parties concerned of the decision taken.

This German article lists Lausanne, Turin, Vancouver and Taipei as cities that have been contacted about holding the Championships:

Phil Hersh has reported on Twitter that Skate Canada will not be hosting the event. The article also mentions that the ice rink where Savchenko and Szolkowy train does not have ice past March. This may be a problem for other competitiors as well if the competition is delayed too long.

The ISU President has said that a final decision regarding Worlds will be made in the next three to four days and the Council will meet tomorrow. He did suggest that moving the event is a possibility. U.S. Figure Skating officials are reporting that they have not been contacted regarding hosting Worlds.

In this article: ISU VP David Dore said switching venues is not an option, and that if Worlds is still going to occur, it will need to be in the next 6 weeks:

This Washington Post article states that ISU officials spent the day seeking an alternate venue for Worlds and reiterates that U.S. Figure Skating has offered assistance but has not been asked to host:

Compassion crucial for champions Asada, Takahashi

TOKYO — World figure skating champions Mao Asada and Daisuke Takahashi expressed their sympathy for the victims of Japan's massive earthquake and tsunami, a day after their showpiece event was shelved.

The International Skating Union (ISU) said Monday it had called off the world figure skating championships scheduled for March 21-27 in Tokyo and would reschedule them only if safety could be assured.

About 55,000 advance tickets had been sold out for the event at the Yoyogi National Gymnasium where Asada was due to defend her crown against South Korea's Olympic champion Kim Yu-Na.

"Whether the world championships are postponed or cancelled, I am determined as a competitor to continue training as I did before while watching the situation," said the 20-year-old women's champion.
"I am praying that as many people as possible will be found safe," added Asada, the Olympic silver medallist, who also won the 2008 world title.

More than 10,000 people were estimated to have died in Friday's quake which triggered monster tsunami waves and left a nuclear power plant on the verge of a fuel-rod meltdown along the Pacific coast northeast of Tokyo.

Takahashi, 24, who became the first Japanese man to win the men's world title in 2010, said he would keep training and watch the situation.

"What is important for each of us now is compassion," said the Olympic bronze winner.
"I believe we can overcome this situation by building strong solidarity together."

Skating officials admitted that it would be difficult to find an alternative venue in Japan for the event before the season ends in April.
"It will not be easy to find a venue of this size," said Japan Skating Federation vice president Keiichi Suzuki.

Immediately after the tremor, the federation informed the ISU that the Yoyogi gymnasium, built for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, had been unaffected and that they still hoped to host the competition.

However, uncertainty surrounding the safety of the nuclear reactors apparently weighed heavily on the ISU's mind.
Tokyo Electric Power Co., which owns the power plants, began rolling power cuts in parts of the capital and surrounding areas to cope with an electricity shortage.
Combined with the unfolding human tragedy, this makes it difficult to stage big sporting events.
J-League football matches and pre-season professional baseball games have been called off.

The last time the world figure skating championships were called off was 50 years ago when an 18-member US team was killed in a plane crash near Brussels while on its way to the 1961 event in Prague.

Three options for the world championship the first is to cancel them

Cinquanta, the ISU president, has announced that the figure skating tournament that should have taken place in Tokyo next week, will either be cancelled or postponed to next October: “At the moment respect for the Japanese people prevails”

MILAN, 15 March 2011 – “The respect for the Japanese people ahead of everything.” This will be the main focus of the ISU as it decides what will be of the 2011 figure skating World Championships that were scheduled to take place in Tokyo next week, but that were officially cancelled by the federation on Monday given the situation. What now appears to be certain, and that dismisses the suggestions emerged in the latest hours, is that the competition will not take place in the coming weeks at a different venue – said the Milan-born Ottavio Cinquanta, president of the international federation – it wouldn’t be correct towards a country that has been struck by such a tragedy and towards the Japanese federation, which was awarded the right to stage the competition. Furthermore, as far as the logistics are concerned, it would be very difficult given the time constraints. Staging a World Championship is no easy task.

THREE OPTIONS — There are three possibilities, as Cinquanta explained: “Our council will consider the situation very carefully. Presumably though, we will opt for the complete cancellation, or a postponement to October. In Tokyo, if the authorities give us the go ahead, or in a city in a different country, and in that eventuality there would be the promise to award Japan with an edition in the future. As soon as possible we will make a statement to make our decision official.”

The future — At the moment, the 2012 edition of the competition has been awarded to France (Nice) and the 2013 one to Canada (London, Ontario). It should also be kept in consideration that the first stage of the next Senior Grand Prix (Skate Canada) is scheduled to take place from 21 to 23 October; and that the only edition of a World Championship to be cancelled was in 1961, when the plane that carried the American team crashed during its landing in Brussels: 72 people died, of which 34 were part of the US team.
