They’ve been legally married for 3 years but haven’t had time for an actual ceremony until now. The show started off with an exchanging of vows, which the emcee read on their behalf (at least that’s what I gathered with my 2nd grade level Chinese). And then Johnny Weir, Alexei Yagudin and Mao Asada all said a few words to them. Yagudin wished them a lot of money and a lot of kids.
Johnny Weir was first, and he did Poker Face! I was really excited because I’ve only seen a really bad youtube version of it, so seeing it live was pretty amazing. I was hoping he would do Poker Face but I wasn’t sure if it would be appropriate for a wedding, but apparently a lot of people wanted to see him perform it in China so he did.
The other memorable performance of the night was Evgeni Plushenko’s “Sex Bomb”. He basically danced around in this big muscle suit, it was hilarious. At first I couldn’t tell if it was a suit because our seats were pretty high up, and I thought “whoa, he’s really muscular for a figure skater” but then I realized that the whole routine was supposed to be a big joke. The other performers were Joannie Rochette, Stephane Lambiel, and two other Chinese pairs skaters. And of course Zhao and Shen did a couple of performances too. This one woman two seats down from me was super excited, I guess she’s a big figure skating fan, especially the male figure skaters. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone scream so loudly for so long and not lose their voice, but boy could she scream. She was pretty adorable, I think everyone in our section got a kick out of her. Also, as a side note, I got some popcorn and it was sweet, as is all popcorn in China, but it’s really good.
The most exciting thing that happened was afterwards, when I GOT TO GO BACKSTAGE! We knew someone who used to skate for the Chinese national team and he had a backstage pass. I almost didn’t get in, but after 3 tries I finally got past security just as Johnny Weir was heading out, and I got a picture with him! I also met Plushenko, Joannie Rochette, Lambiel, Yagudin and Mao Asada, and saw Zhao and Shen walk by.
Plushenko kind of just stood there and looked like he didn’t want to be bothered so I didn’t ask him for a picture, but Joannie Rochette was really sweet.
So basically what I thought was going to be just the oddest wedding I’ll ever witness when I first heard about the show turned out to be a pretty amazing night. I got to see some really great figure skating and met some of the people I just watched compete in the Olympics a few months ago.
