ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating - Samsung Anycall Cup of China, Preview
2009/2010 ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating continues with the Samsung Anycall Cup of China in Beijing from October 30 to November 1. The skaters compete for a global prize money of US $ 180, 000 per individual event of the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating and receive points according to their placements. The top six skaters/couples of the series will proceed to the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final in Tokyo, Japan.
In the Pairs event, the focus lies on the comeback of three-time World Champions Xue Shen/Hongbo Zhao (CHN) who will face their compatriots and reigning World silver medalists Dan Zhang/Hao Zhang. Shen/Zhao had retired from competitive skating in 2007. Tatiana Volosozhar/ Stanislav Morozov (UKR), Meagan Duhamel/Craig Buntin (CAN) and World Junior Champions Lubov Iliushechkina/Nodari Maisuradze (RUS) are aiming at a podium finish as well. The field is completed by Huibo Dong/Yiming Wu (CHN), Vanessa James/Yannick Bonheur (FRA) and Amanda Evora/Mark Ladwig (USA).
Reigning World Champion Evan Lysacek (USA) competes in his first Grand Prix event of the season. The challenge should come from Nobunari Oda (JPN), who won the Trophée Bompard two weeks ago and now wants to assure his spot in the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final. Other contenders include European silver medalist Samuel Contesti (ITA), Yannick Ponsero (FRA), Denis Ten (KAZ), Sergei Voronov (RUS) and Stephen Carriere (USA).
2009 World silver medalists Tanith Belbin/Benjamin Agosto (USA) headline the Ice Dance competition. European Champions Jana Khokhlova/Sergei Novitski (RUS) and European silver medalists Federica Faiella/Massimo Scali (ITA) are ready to challenge Belbin/Agosto. Looking for a good placement are also Alexandra Zaretski/Roman Zaretski (ISR), Kaitlyn Weaver/Andrew Poje (CAN), Anna Zadarozhniuk/Sergei Verbillo (UKR) and World Junior Champions Madison Chock/Greg Zuerlein (USA), who debut on the senior Grand Prix circuit.
World silver medalist Joannie Rochette (CAN) enters her first Grand Prix event this year. European silver medalist Carolina Kostner (ITA) wants to improve on her 6th place finish from Trophée Bompard. Hoping for a medal in Beijing are also 2007 European bronze medalist Kiira Korpi (FIN), three-time World medalist Fumie Suguri (JPN), 2008 World Junior Champion Rachael Flatt (USA) and two-time World Junior medalist Mirai Nagasu (USA).
The schedule of the Samsung Anycall Cup of China is as follows:
Friday, October 29: Compulsory & Original Dance, Ladies, Men and Pairs Short Program
Saturday, October 30: Free Dance, Ladies, Pairs and Men Free Skating
Sunday, November 1: Exhibition Gala

Off to Beijing
Competition kicks off this weekend with the third stop in the Grand Prix, SAMSUNG Anycall Cup of China in Beijing.
There are four ice dance teams I have my eye on. Of course, one of those is Americans Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto who get their season underway in Beijing. They narrowly missed winning their first World Title in L.A. and are the clear favorites here in China. With Domnina and Shabalin currently sidelined with Maxim's knee injury, you might consider them the slight favorites in Vancouver (well...there's still a lot to happen yet). But behind them, I'm completely unsure of how the rest will shake out. I'm envisioning a battle for the silver between Italains Faiella and Scali, Russians Khoklova and Novitski, and the young American team of Chock and Zuerlein (reigning Junior World Champions). I'm very curious to see how Chock and Zuerlein fit into this world of senior dance. Medal Predictions: (GOLD) Belbin and Agosto, (SILVER) Khoklova and Novitski, (BRONZE) Chock and Zuerlein
Amongst the women, Joannie Rochette looks to keep her momentum going. She looked very solid at the recent Japan Open and the reigning World Silver medalist looks to control her own destiny in China. She'll have steep competition from some American and Japanese competitors. Last season Akiko Suzuki put herself on the map as part of a Japanese podium sweep at NHK. With the Japanese Federation relying heavily on Grand Prix placements for choosing the Olympic Team, there is no better time than now for Suzuki to shine. Ditto for Japanese veteran Fumie Suguri. With Mao Asada's stock sinking...now is the time to step up. Rachael Flatt is getting her season underway here in Beijing. She came on late last season with solid performances at U.S. Nationals and a top five finish at World's. She's made steady improvements and perhaps this is her breakthrough season. She'll be joined in Beijing by 2008 National Champ Mirai Nagasu. She's made a coaching switch and perhaps under the gaze of Frank Carroll she'll improve upon last season. She is, admittedly, nervous this season with Sasha Cohen (?) in the U.S. mix...she'll need to shirk those feelings of doubt and get her skating back on track. Finally there's Carolina Kostner who, again, bombed in Paris. She'll have to do better or she'll be written off this season. Medal Predictions: (GOLD) Joannie Rochette, (SILVER) Rachael Flatt, (BRONZE) Carolina Kostner
The pairs competition brings us the much anticipated return of Shen and Zhao. The Chinese team makes a competitive return this season to add Olympic Gold to their collection (which includes two Olympic Bronze medals). I expect they'll be on top of their game here and very tough to beat. The team with the best shot is reigning World Silver medalists Zhang and Zhang. No matter how you slice it, China is in complete control of this competition. The spoilers in this competition, however, could be Ukraine's Volosozhar and Morozov. This team has a quiet consistency and tends to place high in international competition. Another team with a chance at the podium is Canada's Duhamel and Buntin. Medal Predictions: (GOLD) Shen and Zhao, (SILVER) Zhang and Zhang, (BRONZE) Volosozhar and Morozov
The men's competition gives us our first look at the reigning World Champion, American Evan Lysacek. After Plushenko's dominating performance last week in Moscow, Evan needs to comeback with a solid performance of his own to keep the momentum going and not let it all go Plushenko's way. He's going to have steep competition from Japan's Nobunari Oda who will be attempt to become the first skater to lock a spot in the Grand Prix Final in Tokyo. Italian Samuel Contesti will get his season started in China. The big question everyone wants answered from Contesti is if last season was a fluke or if he can continue to post results. I'm also beyond excited to see Kazakstan's Denis Ten. He might be the best skater no one's talking about yet this season. If he can skate well here and keep up with the heavy hitters, he will not only further put himself on the map but he may make himself a medal contender in Vancouver. France's Yannick Ponsero will attempt to improve upon is performance from Paris as well Russian Sergei Voronov. Keep an eye also on American Stephen Carriere who won the silver medal at this event last season and Canada's Kevin Reynolds who will no doubt come packing a punch with his consistent quads. Medal Predictions: (GOLD) Nobunari Oda, (SILVER) Evan Lysacek, (BRONZE) Yannick Ponsero.

Lysacek to set tone for Olympics with season opener
BEIJING - A strong showing at this week's Cup of China will help world champion Evan Lysacek cement his status as a favourite at the Vancouver Olympics.
Beijing marks the 24-year-old American's first competition since winning the title in March. Since then, he's sought to strengthen his artistic elements in preparation for the Olympics, where no reigning world champion has won gold since Scott Hamilton in 1984.
Kevin Reynolds of Coquitlam, B.C., is one of five Canadian entries into the event but the only one in the men's field. He's in his second season on the senior ISU Grand Prix circuit, having collected a pair of fourth-place finishes last year.
Leading the way in a strong women's field is world silver medallist Joannie Rochette of Ile Dupas, Que., competing for the first time this year. This is her second time at the Cup of China, having won bronze in 2004.
Rachel Flatt is another favourite after finishing second at the U.S. championships. The 2008 junior world champion is hoping to grab one of only two American spots for women's singles at the Olympics.
Diane Szmiett of Watford, Ont., in her first year on the senior circuit, Mirai Nagasu, the 2007 U.S. champion who now trains with Michelle Kwan's longtime former coach, Frank Carroll, are also in the field.
Currently leading the ice dancing standings, the American duo of Tanith Belbin, who was born in Kingston, Ont., and Benjamin Agosto face Italian pair Federica Faiella and Massimo Scali and Russian duo Jana Khokhlova and Sergei Novitski.
Belbin and Agosto are looking to upgrade their 2006 Olympic silver to gold in Vancouver. The five-time U.S. champions also won the silver medal at the world championships in March.
The Waterloo, Ont., team of Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje are the sole Canadian entrants, looking to improve on their sixth-place finish at last year's Cup of China.
Two-time Olympic pairs bronze medallists Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo of China are competing for the first time since winning the 2007 world title. Their toughest challenge comes from teammates Zhang Dan and Zhang Hao, silver medallists at the last two world championships.
Meagan Duhamel of Lively, Ont., and Craig Buntin of Kelowna, B.C., will represent Canada.
The Cup of China, which starts Thursday and runs through Sunday, is the third Grand Prix event on the International Skating Union calendar following last week's Rostelecom Cup in Russia and Trophee Bompard in France the week before.
