ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating - Samsung Anycall Cup of China, Preview

2009/2010 ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating continues with the Samsung Anycall Cup of China in Beijing from October 30 to November 1. The skaters compete for a global prize money of US $ 180, 000 per individual event of the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating and receive points according to their placements. The top six skaters/couples of the series will proceed to the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final in Tokyo, Japan.

In the Pairs event, the focus lies on the comeback of three-time World Champions Xue Shen/Hongbo Zhao (CHN) who will face their compatriots and reigning World silver medalists Dan Zhang/Hao Zhang. Shen/Zhao had retired from competitive skating in 2007. Tatiana Volosozhar/ Stanislav Morozov (UKR), Meagan Duhamel/Craig Buntin (CAN) and World Junior Champions Lubov Iliushechkina/Nodari Maisuradze (RUS) are aiming at a podium finish as well. The field is completed by Huibo Dong/Yiming Wu (CHN), Vanessa James/Yannick Bonheur (FRA) and Amanda Evora/Mark Ladwig (USA).

Reigning World Champion Evan Lysacek (USA) competes in his first Grand Prix event of the season. The challenge should come from Nobunari Oda (JPN), who won the Trophée Bompard two weeks ago and now wants to assure his spot in the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final. Other contenders include European silver medalist Samuel Contesti (ITA), Yannick Ponsero (FRA), Denis Ten (KAZ), Sergei Voronov (RUS) and Stephen Carriere (USA).

2009 World silver medalists Tanith Belbin/Benjamin Agosto (USA) headline the Ice Dance competition. European Champions Jana Khokhlova/Sergei Novitski (RUS) and European silver medalists Federica Faiella/Massimo Scali (ITA) are ready to challenge Belbin/Agosto. Looking for a good placement are also Alexandra Zaretski/Roman Zaretski (ISR), Kaitlyn Weaver/Andrew Poje (CAN), Anna Zadarozhniuk/Sergei Verbillo (UKR) and World Junior Champions Madison Chock/Greg Zuerlein (USA), who debut on the senior Grand Prix circuit.

World silver medalist Joannie Rochette (CAN) enters her first Grand Prix event this year. European silver medalist Carolina Kostner (ITA) wants to improve on her 6th place finish from Trophée Bompard. Hoping for a medal in Beijing are also 2007 European bronze medalist Kiira Korpi (FIN), three-time World medalist Fumie Suguri (JPN), 2008 World Junior Champion Rachael Flatt (USA) and two-time World Junior medalist Mirai Nagasu (USA).

The schedule of the Samsung Anycall Cup of China is as follows:
Friday, October 29: Compulsory & Original Dance, Ladies, Men and Pairs Short Program
Saturday, October 30: Free Dance, Ladies, Pairs and Men Free Skating
Sunday, November 1: Exhibition Gala

Off to Beijing

Competition kicks off this weekend with the third stop in the Grand Prix, SAMSUNG Anycall Cup of China in Beijing.

There are four ice dance teams I have my eye on. Of course, one of those is Americans Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto who get their season underway in Beijing. They narrowly missed winning their first World Title in L.A. and are the clear favorites here in China. With Domnina and Shabalin currently sidelined with Maxim's knee injury, you might consider them the slight favorites in Vancouver (well...there's still a lot to happen yet). But behind them, I'm completely unsure of how the rest will shake out. I'm envisioning a battle for the silver between Italains Faiella and Scali, Russians Khoklova and Novitski, and the young American team of Chock and Zuerlein (reigning Junior World Champions). I'm very curious to see how Chock and Zuerlein fit into this world of senior dance. Medal Predictions: (GOLD) Belbin and Agosto, (SILVER) Khoklova and Novitski, (BRONZE) Chock and Zuerlein

Amongst the women, Joannie Rochette looks to keep her momentum going. She looked very solid at the recent Japan Open and the reigning World Silver medalist looks to control her own destiny in China. She'll have steep competition from some American and Japanese competitors. Last season Akiko Suzuki put herself on the map as part of a Japanese podium sweep at NHK. With the Japanese Federation relying heavily on Grand Prix placements for choosing the Olympic Team, there is no better time than now for Suzuki to shine. Ditto for Japanese veteran Fumie Suguri. With Mao Asada's stock sinking...now is the time to step up. Rachael Flatt is getting her season underway here in Beijing. She came on late last season with solid performances at U.S. Nationals and a top five finish at World's. She's made steady improvements and perhaps this is her breakthrough season. She'll be joined in Beijing by 2008 National Champ Mirai Nagasu. She's made a coaching switch and perhaps under the gaze of Frank Carroll she'll improve upon last season. She is, admittedly, nervous this season with Sasha Cohen (?) in the U.S. mix...she'll need to shirk those feelings of doubt and get her skating back on track. Finally there's Carolina Kostner who, again, bombed in Paris. She'll have to do better or she'll be written off this season. Medal Predictions: (GOLD) Joannie Rochette, (SILVER) Rachael Flatt, (BRONZE) Carolina Kostner

The pairs competition brings us the much anticipated return of Shen and Zhao. The Chinese team makes a competitive return this season to add Olympic Gold to their collection (which includes two Olympic Bronze medals). I expect they'll be on top of their game here and very tough to beat. The team with the best shot is reigning World Silver medalists Zhang and Zhang. No matter how you slice it, China is in complete control of this competition. The spoilers in this competition, however, could be Ukraine's Volosozhar and Morozov. This team has a quiet consistency and tends to place high in international competition. Another team with a chance at the podium is Canada's Duhamel and Buntin. Medal Predictions: (GOLD) Shen and Zhao, (SILVER) Zhang and Zhang, (BRONZE) Volosozhar and Morozov

The men's competition gives us our first look at the reigning World Champion, American Evan Lysacek. After Plushenko's dominating performance last week in Moscow, Evan needs to comeback with a solid performance of his own to keep the momentum going and not let it all go Plushenko's way. He's going to have steep competition from Japan's Nobunari Oda who will be attempt to become the first skater to lock a spot in the Grand Prix Final in Tokyo. Italian Samuel Contesti will get his season started in China. The big question everyone wants answered from Contesti is if last season was a fluke or if he can continue to post results. I'm also beyond excited to see Kazakstan's Denis Ten. He might be the best skater no one's talking about yet this season. If he can skate well here and keep up with the heavy hitters, he will not only further put himself on the map but he may make himself a medal contender in Vancouver. France's Yannick Ponsero will attempt to improve upon is performance from Paris as well Russian Sergei Voronov. Keep an eye also on American Stephen Carriere who won the silver medal at this event last season and Canada's Kevin Reynolds who will no doubt come packing a punch with his consistent quads. Medal Predictions: (GOLD) Nobunari Oda, (SILVER) Evan Lysacek, (BRONZE) Yannick Ponsero.

Lysacek to set tone for Olympics with season opener

BEIJING - A strong showing at this week's Cup of China will help world champion Evan Lysacek cement his status as a favourite at the Vancouver Olympics. ::yaz-yk:

Beijing marks the 24-year-old American's first competition since winning the title in March. Since then, he's sought to strengthen his artistic elements in preparation for the Olympics, where no reigning world champion has won gold since Scott Hamilton in 1984.

Kevin Reynolds of Coquitlam, B.C., is one of five Canadian entries into the event but the only one in the men's field. He's in his second season on the senior ISU Grand Prix circuit, having collected a pair of fourth-place finishes last year.

Leading the way in a strong women's field is world silver medallist Joannie Rochette of Ile Dupas, Que., competing for the first time this year. This is her second time at the Cup of China, having won bronze in 2004.

Rachel Flatt is another favourite after finishing second at the U.S. championships. The 2008 junior world champion is hoping to grab one of only two American spots for women's singles at the Olympics.

Diane Szmiett of Watford, Ont., in her first year on the senior circuit, Mirai Nagasu, the 2007 U.S. champion who now trains with Michelle Kwan's longtime former coach, Frank Carroll, are also in the field.

Currently leading the ice dancing standings, the American duo of Tanith Belbin, who was born in Kingston, Ont., and Benjamin Agosto face Italian pair Federica Faiella and Massimo Scali and Russian duo Jana Khokhlova and Sergei Novitski.

Belbin and Agosto are looking to upgrade their 2006 Olympic silver to gold in Vancouver. The five-time U.S. champions also won the silver medal at the world championships in March.

The Waterloo, Ont., team of Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje are the sole Canadian entrants, looking to improve on their sixth-place finish at last year's Cup of China.

Two-time Olympic pairs bronze medallists Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo of China are competing for the first time since winning the 2007 world title. Their toughest challenge comes from teammates Zhang Dan and Zhang Hao, silver medallists at the last two world championships.

Meagan Duhamel of Lively, Ont., and Craig Buntin of Kelowna, B.C., will represent Canada.

The Cup of China, which starts Thursday and runs through Sunday, is the third Grand Prix event on the International Skating Union calendar following last week's Rostelecom Cup in Russia and Trophee Bompard in France the week before.

Figure Skaters...'Nihon e youkoso'

All of my Japanese blog readers will have to let me know if I got the title (Figure Skaters...Welcome to Japan) correct.

Of course that means the Grand Prix makes it's first of two stops in Japan. The first stop this week is for NHK Trophy in Nagano. the second stop will be the Grand Prix Final in Tokyo in December.

The pairs field at NHK is a rematch of sorts between Pang and Tong and Kavaguti and Smirnov. The Chinese duo bested the Russians at Rostelecom Cup and will hope to do the same in Japan. The Chinese duo excels on their technical elements while the Russians have unique and inventive choreography. Should be a good match-up...again! Two American teams are competing in Nagano. Inoue and Baldwin compete in their second event and hope to improve upon their 4th place finish in Paris. I'd imagine they'd hope to hit another gorgeous throw triple axel as well (a highlight from Paris). Denney and Barrett make their season debut and it will be interesting to see if they can maintain their position ahead of Inoue and Baldwin. Last season, Denney and Barrett made a habit of putting down solid free skates. Hopefully in the off season they've worked on improving their second mark and polishing their skating up. I'm also keeping my eye on Japan's Takahashi and Tran. They recently won Junior Grand Prix Poland and, if they skate well, might place well here. Medal Predictions: (GOLD) Pang and Tong, (SILVER) Kavaguti and Smirnov, (BRONZE) Inoue and Baldwin

The Ice Dance field looks like a no brainer. Again, Americans Davis and White come in as overwhelming favorites. They looked sharp at Rostelecom Cup and it will be interesting to see if they can better their score (the highest this season) even more. It looks as if the silver is locked up as well for Kerr and Kerr of Great Britain. And the bronze looks like an easy guess for Canadians Crone and Poirier. If it doesn't shake out like this it would be big news. I'm watching Americans Jane Summersett and Todd Gilles as well. Todd Gilles, if you haven't heard, is the voice of Hot Pockets. Medal Predictions: (GOLD) Davis and White, (SILVER) Kerr and Kerr, (BRONZE) Crone and Poirier

The Japanese ladies look to dominate at NHK. World Bronze medalist and recent winner of Rostelecom Cup Miki Ando is the favorite and looks to secure her spot at the Grand Prix Final. She'll face pressure from her teammate Yukari Nakano who took the bronze in Paris. She'll face some pressure from American Ashley Wagner who was right behind her at Rostelecom Cup winning the silver. The Bronze medalist from Rostelecom Cup, Russian Alena Leonova is also in the mix. Literally we could see a podium repeat. Making their Grand Prix debuts are European Champion Laura Lepisto of Finland and Swiss Champ Sarah Meier. On paper, Laura is the biggest threat to Miki Ando. Medal Predictions: (GOLD) Miki Ando, (SILVER) Ashley Wagner, (BRONZE) Yukari Nakano

The mens event is the most exciting of the entire Grand Prix. It's loaded. First the leading men. Brian Joubert, Daisuke Takahashi, Jeremy Abbott, Johnny Weir, and Takahiko Kozuka are all competing. It kind of feels like a crapshoot as to who will come out ahead here. Joubert and Weir have both had poor showings thus far on the Grand Prix. Joubert with a 4th place showing in France, Weir the same result in Russia. Takahashi and Abbott make their Grand Prix debuts in Japan. Takahashi had a strong showing recently at Finlandia, winning that event and looking well on his way to being up to competing with the top guys in the world. Abbott decided in September to change his long program music meaning his program doesn't have the miles the other guys have with their programs. He did compete with it a few weeks ago at the Japan Open. Kozuka comes in with the best footing after a strong performance that earned him the silver medal in Russia.

Past these five there is a strong cast of would be spoilers as well. Adam Rippon had a breakthrough performance in Paris to earn the bronze medal. His skating, under the direction of Brian Orser, seems to have come alive and a solid skate from Adam would definitely make him a podium contender (he'll have to hit those axels though). Recent Bronze medalist from Rostelecom Cup, Artem Borodulin, is in the mix as well. He managed to sneak past Weir in Russia with an outstanding free skate and he'll hope to repeat that effort in Japan. If Canadian Jeremy Ten can combine his incredible speed with solid jumping he'll be one to keep an eye on as well. The always entertaining Kristoffer Berntsson of Sweden is in the mix, it'll be fun to see what he's come up with this season (can he top last season's 80's Robot?). Two young upstarts round out the field; Japan's Daisuke Murakami (who is the only member of the Japanese National Team on Twitter!) and Czech Michal Brezina. What an exciting men's field! Medal Predictions: (GOLD) Daisuke Takahashi, (SILVER) Takahiko Kozuka, (BRONZE) Brian Joubert

Ando aims for second win of GP season at NHK Trophy

When Miki Ando takes the ice at the Big Hat in Nagano on Friday she will be looking to notch a Grand Prix victory for Nikolai Morozov's stable of skaters for the fourth straight weekend.
Ando, who opened her season with a victory at the Rostelecom Cup in Moscow last month, will try to extend the Russian coach's string of success at the NHK Trophy, after Nobunari Oda began the GP campaign with a victory in the Trophee Bompard in Paris, before adding his second GP crown at the Cup of China last weekend.

"Miki is skating very well," Morozov said by telephone after arriving in Japan from Beijing on Monday. "She has been working hard in practice and is very determined. I think it shows in her performance."

When asked if the goal this weekend is for Ando to secure a spot at the Grand Prix Final in Tokyo next month, Morozov had a different take.
"We don't look at it that way," he said. "We are just treating this like another competition and not focused on anything else."

Morozov said he is pleased with the collective effort of his charges.
"Our group has done well so far (this season)," he noted. "We are feeling good about where we are at this point."

Ando, the 2007 world champion, will be the favorite in a field that will include compatriots Yukari Nakano and Shoko Ishikawa.
Ando's primary competition is expected to come in the form of American Ashley Wagner (second in Moscow) and Russian Alena Leonova (third in Moscow).
Nakano, who placed third in France, will be looking for another podium finish and a possible place in the GP Final.

Ishikawa, a 19-year-old Tokyo native, will be making her debut in a senior GP. She was a late addition after Nana Takeda withdrew due to injury.

The men's field in Nagano is loaded. Daisuke Takahashi, the No. 1-ranked skater in the world two seasons ago, will make his return to the Grand Prix circuit after missing all of last season following an injury and major knee surgery.
Also representing Japan will be Takahiko Kozuka (second behind Evgeni Plushenko in Moscow) and the Morozov-coached Daisuke Murakami, who will be skating in his first senior GP.

The United States will have a strong contingent with three-time national champion Johnny Weir, Jeremy Abbott (winner of last year's GP Final), and two-time world junior champion Adam Rippon (who was formerly coached by Morozov).

France's Brian Joubert, the 2007 world champion, is also in the field.

Narumi Takahashi and Mervin Tran will lead Japan in the pairs against the likes of U.S. duo Rena Inoue and John Baldwin and Russia's Yuko Kawaguchi and Alexander Smirnov.

Japan's Cathy and Chris Reed will seek their first GP victory in ice dance, where they will go up against Britain's Sinead and John Kerr.

Mao plot thickens: No word yet from the Japan Skating Federation or Mao Asada's camp on the planned meeting between JSF president Seiko Hashimoto and Mao to address her struggles this season.

Fans and media will no doubt be anxious to hear the outcome of this powwow and what impact it may have on the status of Mao's current coach Tatiana Tarasova.

The most recent sign of dysfunction in the relationship came when Nikkan Sports reported that Tarasova may not come to Osaka for the Japan nationals next month because the Russian nationals will be going on at the same time.

This seems to add more intrigue to the equation, as it will be one of Mao's last chances to skate competitively before the Vancouver Olympics.

The only other opportunity would be at the Four Continents Championships in South Korea at the end of January.

An e-mail request to Mao's agent, Mariko Wada of IMG, for an update on a timetable for the meeting, went unanswered.

In the meantime, readers of The Japan Times are encouraged to vote in the poll on the top page of our Web site asking how Mao can best improve her chances of winning the gold medal in Vancouver.

Wagner, Joubert lead at NHK skate

Ashley Wagner of the United States finished first in the women's short program at the NHK Trophy on Friday, edging Miki Ando of Japan.

The 18-year-old Wagner opened with a triple flip at the Nagano arena, double toe loop in a routine to the soundtrack from Once Upon a Time in America. Her only mistake came on a double Axel that was downgraded, and she finished with 56.54 points. Ando was second with 56.22 points, while Yukari Nakano of Japan was third with 54.92.
"First place is a good place to be but it wasn't my best performance," said Wagner. "My double Axel was downgraded but hopefully I can do it cleanly tomorrow in the long program."
Wagner, who finished second in the Rostelecom Cup, is bidding for a place in the Grand Prix final, which will be held in Tokyo on Dec. 3-6....

Ando, who won the Rostelecom Cup two weeks ago in Russia, fell on her second element — a triple flip — but recovered to keep herself in position for a second Grand Prix title.
"I wasn't pleased with my program today. It was poor from my viewpoint," Ando said. "It wasn't just that I fell but the overall performance wasn't good. I was able to finish second perhaps because of the support of the fans but the result today just wasn't good enough."

Nakano two-footed the landing on a triple Lutz and botched her opening combination jump.
"It's a shame I missed that opening combination," Nakano said. "Because other than that I was pleased with the way things went."...

Joubert, Wagner take top spots after shorts at NHK
Davis, White lead dance; Kavaguti, Smirnov lead pairs

(11/06/2009) - The NHK Trophy kicked off Friday in Nagano, Japan, with the compulsory dance and the pairs, men's and ladies short programs. The NHK Trophy is the fourth of six events in the 2009-10 ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating series. The skaters compete for a global prize money of US $180,000 per individual event of the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating and receive points according to their placements. The top six skaters/couples of the series will proceed to the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final in Tokyo, Japan.

Compulsory dance
The compulsory dance at the NHK Trophy was the Tango Romantica. The Tango Romantica is a romantic sinuous dance which expresses the soft, lyrical interpretive characteristics of the Tango. It must be skated with deep edges. The judges are looking for very erect carriage, precise timing and continuous flow. The difficulty of the steps should not be revealed in awkward or stressed upper body positions. The dance was created by 1976 Olympic Ice Dance Champions Ludmilla Pakhomova and Alexander Gorshkov and their coach Elena Tchaikovskaya. It was first performed in Moscow in 1974.

Meryl Davis and Charlie White (USA) danced to the lead ahead of Great Britain's Sinead Kerr and John Kerr and Ekaterina Bobrova and Dmitri Soloviev.

Davis and White put out a solid Tango Romantica that earned them a new seasons best score of 38.09 (18.90 element score/19.19 program component score).

"We felt like it was a good dance today. It was improved since Russia. We tried to add a little bit of romantic flair. We worked on a few things technically and performance-wise since Russia," Davis commented.

Kerr and Kerr skated also well and picked up 35.04 points (17.42/17.62). Bobrova and Soloviev produced a nice Tango as well to score 31.72 (16.54/15.18) points.

Pairs short program
Russia's Yuko Kavaguti and Alexander Smirnov grabbed the lead in the pairs short program ahead of Qing Pang and Jian Tong of China. Caydee Denney and Jeremy Barrett (USA) came in third.

Performing to "The Swan" by Camille Saint-Saens, Kavaguti and Smirnov produced a strong performance that was highlighted by their excellent side by side triple toe loop, a throw triple loop and a triple twist. The reigning European silver medalists were awarded a Level 4 for their spins and the lift while the death spiral and the footwork were graded a level three. The couple from St. Petersburg received a new seasons best of 68.90 points (38.94 element score/29.96 program component score).

"We were very active in these past one and a half weeks after the Rostelecom Cup," said Smirnov. "We wanted to make up for the weaknesses we showed there. We skated quite well today, but it wasn't ideal yet. We still had some problems with our elements, not all of them were as clean as we wanted them to be," he continued.

Pang and Tong opened their lyrical program to "The Pearlfishers" by Georges Bizet with a side by side triple toe loop, but he put his hand down. The team recovered instantly to reel off a high triple twist and throw triple loop. They got a Level 4 for their spins and the lift. The reigning Grand Prix Final Champions picked up 67.30 points (37.74/30.56).

Denney and Barrett skated first out of the eight pairs. Their dynamic routine to "Firebird" included a triple twist, triple toe loop, throw triple Lutz and a Level 4 spin. The backwards outside death spiral received only a Level 1. The U.S. silver medalists scored 55.20 points (33.08/22.12).

Men's short program
Brian Joubert of France captured the men's short program with U.S. skaters Jeremy Abbott and Johnny Weir following in second and third.

Joubert nailed a strong quadruple-triple toe loop combination and a triple Axel in his fast-paced routine to "Rise" by Safri Duo, but he did a three-turn out of his triple Lutz. The European Champion went on to complete two Level 4 spins and Level 3 footwork. Only the combination spin got a Level 2. The Frenchman earned 85.35 points (46.80 element score/38.55 program component score), significantly improving over his score from the Trophée Bompard.

"I am very happy with today's performance. It was difficult for me after my first Grand Prix. I was very disappointed there, and it was important for me to do this kind of program today. This gives me confidence for the rest of the competition," Joubert told the press.

Abbott opened his elegant performance to "A Day in the Life" by The Beatles with a solid triple flip-triple toe loop combination followed by a triple Axel and triple Lutz. The reigning ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final Champion was awarded a Level 4 for the change foot sit spin and the flying sit spin and a Level 3 for the combination spin and both step sequences. Abbott scored 83.00 points (45.40/37.60).

Skating to a program he titled "I Love You, I Hate You", Weir landed a triple Lutz-triple toe loop, a triple Axel and triple flip. He picked up a Level 4 for two spins and a Level 3 for the combination spin and the circular footwork to post a seasons best score of 78.35 points (41.70/36.65).

Ladies short program
Ashley Wagner(USA) won the Ladies short program ahead of Japan's Miki Ando and Yukari Nakano.

Wagner's routine set to music from Once Upon a Time in America featured a triple flip-double toe loop combination, a triple Lutz and two Level 4 spins, but her double Axel was cheated and downgraded. The two-time world junior bronze medalist collected 56.54 points (29.62 element score/26.92 program component score).

"I am pretty happy with my short program. Obviously first place is a good place to be, but it was not my best performance. My double Axel was downgraded. That was a little silly of me, but tomorrow in the long program I'll be able to redeem myself and do a clean double Axel like a senior lady should be able to do," Wagner noted.

Ando opened her program to a modern version of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Requiem" with a triple Lutz-double loop, but two-footed the Lutz. She fell on the triple flip, but landed the double Axel. Ando was awarded a Level 4 for the combination spin and a Level 3 for the flying sit spin and the spiral sequence, but the layback spin was just a Level 1. The 2007 World Champion scored 56.22 points (28.70/28.52).

Nakano also had trouble with a jump. She under-rotated her triple Lutz and stepped out of it and had no combination. The Japanese recovered to hit a triple flip, a double Axel and showed beautiful spins. All three spins received a Level 4. Nakano earned 54.92 points (28.40/26.52).
