With Skate America and Skate Canada in the books, this season’s ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating now heads to Asia for Cup of China and NHK Trophy. No skater has qualified for the Grand Prix Final yet, but there sure are plenty of contenders for the six spots that are available for each discipline.

With five medals, two of which are gold, the Canada currently leads the medal count, though both the U.S. and Japan have three medals each. The U.S. and Russia both have with two golds.

I am having doubt on Coach Carroll's professionism. He has been politiking against rivals of his students too much, and politiking for his own students too obvious. Is he trying to affect judges so they will mark down Liza in favor of his students? Shouldn't a coach focus on teaching his students?

ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating series

Follow the entire ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating series on Eurosport.
The series hosts six stops: United States (Skate America), Canada (Skate Canada International), China (Cup of China), France, Russia and Japan. Skaters are awarded points based on their placements at their assigned events and the top six in each of the four disciplines advance to the Final.
From 8-11 December Eurosport will air the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final Live from Québec City

Opining on Skate Canada: The rise of the quad, confirmed (... we confirmed that long ago! )

Another Skate Canada is done and with that, we are a third of the way through the Grand Prix series this season. It was some competition, with an almost meteoric rise of a couple of skaters to the forefront of the conversation and some technical daredevilness going on. Here are some thoughts as we prepare ourselves for the third Grand Prix of the season this weekend.

Four different quads attempted.

The biggest story for me this past weekend at Skate Canada was the proliferation of quads in the men’s event. It seemed inevitable for the season, and I had written about it during my season previews. And it wasn’t just a bunch of skaters trying quad toes, it was that, for the first time in figure skating history, four different types of quads were attempted in one event. And though only the toe and salchow were successfully completed, it was the perfect testament to how the guys are going to skate this season.

Right before Skate Canada began last week, the ISU ratified Brandon Mroz’s quad lutz from the Colorado Springs Invitational. At Skate Canada, six men attempted eight quads in the free skate. Rippon had the lutz, Takahashi had the flip, Fernandez had the sal, and Fernandez, Chan, Ten, and Van Der Perren all did the toe (Chan tried two). In the end, Chan hit one of his quads, Fernandez cleanly landed his quad sal, and Van Der Perren landed his quad toe.

Now, this certainly isn’t going to happen at every competition, as Takahashi is the only one attempting the quad flip at this time (he also tried the quad toe in his short program) and only Rippon and Mroz are working the lutz. But the technical horizon this season sure is much different than it has ever been. And as I had written before, the quad assault is now the norm.

Minimalism rules for Takahashi.

Speaking of Daisuke Takahashi, I found his reinvention this season very refreshing. He’s been known for most of his career as the flashy skater – big music, big costumes, and earlier on, big hair. Remember hip-hop Swan Lake?

But he is attacking this season with a sense of minimalism. Both of his programs this year are almost subdued and quiet, and there is an almost abstract quality to the choreography. He’s not playing a character, he’s not replicating some sort of dance on the ice, and he’s not skating to overused music. And that’s really tough – introducing something that fans aren’t used to (just ask Michelle Kwan and her one-competition fling with The Miraculous Mandarin, which, to this day, I believe had loads of potential).

It’s a sense of the abstract that few skaters can pull off. And Takahashi is pulling it off tremendously well. Certainly, these programs aren’t everyone’s cup of tea. But pundits should try to strip away the fact that maybe they don’t like the music and instead, look at how he is so masterfully utilizing the nuances of the music to show off what an incredible skater he is. It’s too bad, though, next to all the in-your-faceness that is figure skating, it’s tough to look past it and be impressed with subtlety.
